Dirty Electricity (DE) is a non-scientific term used to describe the electricity in a home or workplace that deviates from a pure 50/60 Hz sine wave. Also known as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and microsurge electrical pollution (MEP), DE happens when spikes and surges of electromagnetic energy (current and voltage) travel along power lines and building wiring where only standard 50/60 Hz AC electricity should be.
There are many sources for dirty electricity. Some of the major sources include:
Power from the utility company
Switch mode power supplies used in electronics
Smart meters
Smart appliances
Solar photovoltaic systems
Variable speed motors
Pool pumps
Electronics using transformers
AMI meters
Energy efficient CFL lights
